Hurricane Preparedness
In the previous article we discussed one of the worst storms to experience which are hurricanes. During hurricane season hurricanes can form so quickly that there isn't much time to evacuate therefore the best thing to do is to prepare. I had the privilege of living in Louisiana for a couple of years in which you can experience island life daily. There you are surrounded by water as the Mississippi Delta empties into the Gulf of Mexico; which makes Louisiana a target for hurricanes annually. It didn't take long before I was introduced to my first hurricane where I quickly learned how to anticipate and prepare for them.
When a hurricane watch has been issued you have two options either you pack what you can and leave until the storm passes or you stay, prepare and brace for impact. When you decide to stay you may only have hours to prepare so it is best to have certain items on standby such as tea light candles both wax and battery operated, flashlights & batteries, disposable plates, cups and cutlery, non-perishable food items to eat and LOTS of water. To stay up to date on the storm you will need a news & weather app, a charged portable cellphone charger and a LOT of patience. It is important to remain in your home once the hurricane has made landfall as it will bring heavy rain and wind that will decrease visibility. After the storm passes be sure to replenish those emergency storm items that you used so that you are ready for the next one.
