Smart Grid
For electrical power to reach your home, place of residence or business electric power must travel from power plants. Historically power grids were ran using fossil fuels however with a reduction in fossil fuel availability and large emissions of greenhouse gases engineers have implemented new methods for the power grid concept. Smart grids are an advanced technology that utilizes advanced metering, smart distribution boards and circuit breakers that use wireless and/or fiber optic cables connected to ethernet networks. The use of smart grids have resulted in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction in utility costs. To take this concept a step further currently super grids are the topic of discussion for connecting nations. To connect with European countries the smart grid will utilize high voltage DC (direct current) as this form of current can travel long distances thereby resulting in the super grid connection.
