Space Hibernation
Hibernation is a state of suspended animation where metabolism decreases; metabolism is the breaking down of consumed food for energy use. Torpor is a state in which the energy consuming cells stop working thereby resulting in a reduction in body temperature and brain activity. Particle accelerators can potentially be used to induce torpor to analyze the physiological changes that the body undergoes at a cellular level. These changes include monitoring oxygen concentration, temperature changes and resistance to radiation. Torpor is a state of being that has the potential to benefit individuals stricken with cancer to target tumor cells and prevent them from growing without the destruction of healthy cells and tissue. It can also be used during space travel to prevent bone & muscle wasting as well as the reduction of food use. Prior to this theory being tested on humans it will require that ethical issues be addressed.
